Is it Safe to Receive Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy?

Yes! At The Rejuvenation Center, Layton-based Dr. Brad Miller is trained to work skillfully and safely with pregnant women to provide spinal and hip adjustments and pain relief in a way that will not cause undue pressure on the baby.

Should I Have Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy?

In addition to the varied everyday symptoms, pregnancy itself can take a toll on the human body. A developing baby causes a protruding abdomen, increased back curve, pelvic changes and changes to the expecting mother’s posture. If left uncared for, these can cause issues such as reducing the amount of room available for the developing baby or for the baby to get into the best possible position for delivery. This can result in complications during birth that result in a Cesarean Delivery rather than a natural childbirth.

Should I Have a Prenatal or Postnatal  Massage Massage?

Prenatal massage (or postnatal) is a term that refers to a multitude of whole-body and targeted treatments. They can relieve pain and promote wellness for both the developing baby and expecting mother. Our licensed massage therapist is a Master Bodyworker who  will take extra care to ensure the expecting mother is comfortable throughout the entire session. She will also use special techniques for a safe massage that will not put undue stress on the developing baby and will avoid certain pressure points that could stimulate release.

Benefits of Pregnancy Massage

The extra weight of carrying a developing baby can cause fatigue, stress, back aches, migraines, and swelling in the joints- among other things. Massage therapy will help release the body’s natural anti-pain chemical serotonin, endorphins for a natural feeling of wellbeing, and dopamine for improved sleep patterns.

Studies have also shown that these changes in hormone levels have led to fewer complications during birth such as low birth weight.

What Types of Massage are Good for Pregnant Women?

Massage therapists use elements of Swedish Massage for pregnant women. Though, they will also avoid certain pressure points and areas, as these can actually induce contractions. Therapists trained in pregnancy massage will vary their methods to reduce pressure on the abdomen, use pillows and alternative positions to access target areas from the head to the toes. They may also use essential oils and aromatherapy, but will avoid oils that are to known cause complications for pregnant mothers.

In studies, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (or PNF stretching) has also been found to be effective in postpartum pregnancy treatment to increase range of motion and reduce pain.

Every case is different, just like every person and their comfort level. So, The Rejuvenation Center will work with each expecting mother to create a personalized treatment plan that may include some or all of these treatments.
